It will be four in the morning again very soon. Already I can see my old friend Leonard Cohen is wearing that raincoat. I think he offered it to Hank Williams but Hank just coughed, shook his head, and looked the other way. Leonard says he doesn't t really need a raincoat in The Tower Of Song, but he thought Hank might wear it to remember a time he did.
I tell Leonard I am just back from New York City, and yes they were still playing music on Clinton Street . "All through the evening? ", he asked. "Yes, all through the evening." That made him smile.
I asked Leonard if his famous blue raincoat was still torn at the shoulder. He confessed it would be that way forever now.
"It's how a poem is born," Leonard, smiled, tapping on his fedora, and skipping down the road to spend one more night in The Tower Of Song.
